Craft History & Reference

Craft History & Reference

Arts & Crafts Society "We agree with Gustav Stickley that simple, honest design and execution is infinitely preferable to enormous quantities of poorly constructed goods made of inferior materials. Our personal tastes vary, but we think that the original Arts and Crafts Movement-- with its focus on beauty, utility, craftsmanship, and striving to be in harmony with nature--was the original environmental movement. As such, we want to promote those values in our everyday life and those of our readers."
The Top 100 Craft Sites Report Links to the 100 most visited commercial craft sites.
Craft At Home "For as long as I can remember, I have made things. All sorts of things. As a child, I couldn't wait to try a hot iron, sewing machine and weaving machine, but those would have to wait until "I was old enough"."
Craft Ideas Articles "Craft ideas that hopefully will inspire you to create your own original works. While you are free to use any of the ideas you find on these pages, remember that it is better to be distinctive, so just take what’s presented here as your starting point and improvise."

The Arts and Crafts Movement in America "This movement's beginning is recorded as having started in England.  The name most closely associated with this movement is arguably William Morris.  Yep, he and several others formed a home furnishings company called Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Their ideas and conceptions of good taste made the rounds in this world at the end of the 19th century in the form of wallpaper, furniture covers and "useful embroideries"."
Traditional Arts and Crafts "A variety of traditional arts and crafts, each with a lengthy history and unparalleled workmanship, have been passed down through the generations in Fukushima Prefecture. Most stress the use of natural materials and, In modern times, have attracted renewed interest and acclaim"
The William Morris Society "The life, work, and ideas of William Morris are as important today as they were in his lifetime. The William Morris Society exists to make them as widely known as possible. The many-sidedness of Morris and the variety of his activities bring together in the Society those who are interested in him as designer, craftsman, businessman, poet, preservationist, environmental pioneer and socialist, or who admire his robust and generous personality and his creative energy and courage."

Weaving Arts & Lore "Myths of weaving exist around the world as metaphors for creation.  The spindle is often an axis mundi and its whirling whorls serve a cosmogonic function.  Plato, for example, had a vision of the great goddess Ananke, "Necessity," spinning the universe; the sun, moon, and planets were her spindle's whorls; sirens sang through the webs of time and fate that she wove, and souls endlessly moved through the strands on their way to and from death and rebirth."
Weaving Resources "Here's a collection of interesting weaving and fibre sites and other fun web sites that I either found myself, was asked to link to, or was told of on the Weaving List Group since 4/5/96"

We decided to launch it to provide resources for teachers, therapists, and craft enthusiasts in the year 1999. Since then, the website has grown tremendously in terms of content and resource information."
Rainbow Gallery "More choices is what Rainbow Gallery is about. Why settle for plain wool or cotton? Stitching is much more fun if you have the ideal thread for each area of your project. Your finished work will be even more beautiful! Rainbow offers you a far wider stitching pallet than any other thread company. It searches the world for out-of-the-ordinary threads and brings them to you on convenient bobbin cards."
Top Sewing Blogs "The list includes sewing and craft blogs."
The Millenery Commercial site with considerable information. "We cater to specific consumer needs, offering top quality and hard-to-find sewing supplies and reproduction needle art implements."
Needle Book "A needle book is literally a booklet of sewing needles. They are made of lightweight cardboard, kind of like the cover of a paperback book, though the older ones do not have the "shine" of today's covers and are made of thicker paper. Their average size is about the same as that of a post card. Inside there are various sized needles and usually a needle threader. The needles are foil-stuck, cloth-stuck, or presented in little packets. They were much prettier than comparable items available to women today. It is amazing to think that at the time, many were giveaways."
Embroidery
“Blackwork embroidery is a counted-thread embroidery technique. The simplest of all the embroidery stitches, the straight stitch, is used to make up the complex and intricate designs that can often be seen. When these straight stitches are sewn in a combination, they make lines or geometric patterns. These geometric patterns are the main basis for the Blackwork embroidery technique.”
Blackwork Embroidery
Needle 'N Thread An embroidery blog
Embroidery Methods "Decorative stitching has such a long history. It's been done in a variety of forms all over the world. Some people prefer counted cross stitch, but others adore blackwork or Swedish huck weaving. I want to try them all! I love traditional needlearts and think it's important for them to find a place in the 21st century."
Step by Step Decorative Embroidery Stitches "The art of embroidery is old but still popular today. It’s fun to create and by knowing how to make a few simple embroidery stitches using a needle and thread, one’s ideas may be expressed in luxurious handmade articles. Try all these basic stitches; in fact make a sampler of them, using heavy dark material, linen is best, and white or golden yellow embroidery thread."
New Zealand Embroidery Guild "We hope through visiting this website you will be enthused to seek further information or become more involved in embroidery."
A History of Decorative Motifs "Years and years ago I did an educational exhibit for the Embroiders' Guild correspondence course I took on Crewel Embroidery "
A Brief History of Embroidery Samplers "The rich history of samplers is hinted at in commercially produced patterns. Apart from patterns for antique reproduction samplers, some samplers depict Family trees, while others commemorate events, such as weddings or births."
Needlework Tips and Techniques “Are you at your happiest with a needle and thread in your hands? Do you love to create beautiful hand embroidery? Would you like to expand on the needlework tips and techniques that you know and love and try something different, or are you a total beginner who needs basic instructions and guides to get you started? Let me introduce you to the wonderful world of creative needlework. With so many different forms of embroidery to learn about and enjoy you may need to go grab a cup of coffee and sit a while while you peruse this site and stitch with me.”
Embroiderers' Guild "On 12 January 1906, the Society of Certificated Embroideresses was founded by 16 graduates of the Royal School of Art Needlework with the aim "to deal entirely with embroidery and with the first object of keeping up a high standard of work and design".

Since then, the website has grown tremendously in terms of content and resource information."
Happy Yellow House "I love designing and sharing what I come up with.  I used to sell my patterns, but that was way too much stress.  I'm having much more fun just giving them away for free!  I intend to do my best to keep the patterns realistic as well.  There are a lot of great designs out there in the marketplace and on the Web that use expensive yarns.  Those are great, don't get me wrong, I love those, too.  I've even stitched up some of them.  But I want to keep things simple for everyday stitching."

Thimbles

"Welcome, thimble collectors and collectors in general."
Thimbles & Things Collector Ring
Pins, Needles and Thimbles "There has been very little change in the design of the thimble since its discovery in the volcanic rubble of Mount Vesuvius, in the Roman ruins of England, and in other excavation sites around the world. The earliest example found is an open-ended thimble dating from 79 AD."
Dorset Thimble Society "The first non commercial UK Society for collectors of (primarily antique) thimbles and sewing tools"
The Philadelphia Thimble Society "On February 12 1979, nine thimble collectors who had become acquainted through one another met to discuss the idea of starting a thimble group. It was a beautiful but cold winter day. Everyone was excited to see each other and talk thimbles, but especially at the prospect of forming a "thimble society" that would attract other collectors. "
Russian Thimbles "There are many countries where we can find societies of thimbles collectors, there is a museum of thimbles in Germany, various books about thimbles are published all over the world, but we have nothing of that kind in Russia. Collecting of thimbles isn't so popular in Russia as in Europe or in the USA. It's to put it mildly. We can name from memory Russian collectors of thimbles. It's very strange that our collectors in the main collect foreign thimbles, which they carry from their trips abroad. But I want to attract your attention to our Russian thimbles, because it's a part of our Great Russian culture"
Thimble Collectors International "The Thimble Collectors International (TCI) provides information about thimble collecting to TCI members.  We do this through our quarterly publication, TCI Bulletin.  We additionally promote research and scholarship, publishing specialized booklets on thimbles and related needlework tools."

Clothing

Clothing

The Scarf Collector "Silk scarves will always be top of the list for most collectors, having said that many rare vintage scarves were made from rayon particularly during the  WW2 era due to the fact that the use of silk was prohibited as the war progressed, silk was then used for the production of parachutes as well as silk escape maps which were carried by our armed forces. "

Fashion in the 60s and 70s "Fashion for us kids in the early 60s was way, way different than fashion in the early 70s! For us, the whole scene changed in the 60s. What you wore to get attention in 1965 you would not get caught dead wearing in 1968. That's just the way it was"
Costume Gallery Research Library "Below our online library is divided into six areas or bookshelves. When you see an area you would like to view, just click on the book and enjoy! We have added many new articles and sections to study."

Historical Boys Clothing "The transition from elegant velvet Little Lord Fauntleroy suits, kilts, sailor suits, and dressy short pants to casual sweat shirts and blue jeans or baggy trousers for boys is an interesting study in social history. The mod boy of today who wears trendy, comfortable fashions he usually helps select would hardly recognize his counterpart of 100 years ago."
Costume, Fashion & Textile Dictionary "The Dictionary consists of over 200 pages in Abobe Acrobat. The definitions cover the fashion and textile industries history from ancient times to the 1890s. The Dictionary also covers certain areas of industries trends and statistics for the 19th Century."

History of Linen "When the tomb of the Pharaoh of the Exodus, Rameses II., who died 1258 B.C, - 3,000 years ago - was discovered in 1881, the linen wrappings were in a state of perfect preservation. "
Fabric Identification "To identify fabric that is unknown, a simple burn test can be done to determine if the fabric is a natural fiber, man made fiber, or a blend of natural and man made fibers. The burn test is used by many fabric stores and designers and takes practice to determine the exact fiber content."
Costumes
"Costuming is an aspect of clowning that is very important. It works hand in hand with makeup to help create your clowning trademark. Like makeup, costume should be an original creation, expressing your clown’s character."

Halloween Origins, Customs and Traditions "The Celts believed that the veil between this world and the next was thinnest at this time of year. Friends and relatives who had died would often return, with their souls inhabiting an animal - often a black cat. Black cats have remained a symbol of Halloween down to the present time. "
Lord of the Rings - Costumes "We're here to study everything about the costumes from fabric to patterns to metalworking. We look at every thing from elvish costume to hobbit costumes.  The LOTR costumes are just too fantastic not to research! "
Shirley Eborn Costume Maker "Many people who seek vintage find that it is not for them when it comes to wearing it.  Whilst countless adore vintage, some find it just too precious to wear and still others don't like the idea of wearing clothes that someone else has worn before them.  Having your period costume or bridal wear made for you may be the answer."
Textile & Textile Arts Originally created for those making costumes for the SCA (historic re-enactment)
The Costumer's Manifesto "When I costume, I am not a fashion designer nor a clothing manufacturer, but a builder of character, concept, and physical movement."
Lace
"The publication of patterns for needlepoint and pillow laces dates from about the middle of the 16th century. Before that period lace described such articles as cords and narrow braids of plaited and twisted threads, used not only to fasten shoes sleeves and corsets together, but also in a decorative manner to braid the hair, to wind round hats, and to be sewn as trimmings upon costumes."

Intimate details reveal their construction."

Sewing Machines

"Seewing is a 20 000 year old activity! In the 14th century, the needle is invented and is pierced with an eye during the following century. However, it is only in the early 19th century that mechanical sewing becomes possible thanks to a French inventor"
Sewing Machines from the Past to the Present
Sewing Machines and Sewing Projects "Sewing machine technology has come a long way in the last 150 years or so -- especially in the last 20 or 30 years since computerized sewing technology has emerged. Computerized sewing machines offer dozens and dozens of elegant and fancy stitches -- I have one of them and it's a great machine.  However, while there are wonderful machines produced today, machines made nearly 100 years ago are still being used! And they're producing really quality work!"
Vintage Sewing Machines "A large number of people have discovered the benefits of older sewing machines. Whether it's because they are simple enough to maintain and repair with common handtools, or strong enough to sew thicker fabrics without hesitation, or just because they are plentiful, cheap, and fun to collect. This site is dedicated to passing on information to make your experience more enjoyable."

We decided to launch it to provide resources for teachers, therapists, and craft enthusiasts in the year 1999. Since then, the website has grown tremendously in terms of content and resource information."
The Daily Knitter "Knitting is more than just a hobby - it is therapy, stress relief, and a creative outlet to the over 38 million knitters in the United States. Nothing is better at melting away the day's stresses than a soft ball of yarn and the click-click of knitting needles. Knitting patterns are the road map to this bliss and the variety available is amazing. If you can dream it, someone out there has created a knitting pattern to make it. "
