"Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" was the slogan for William Henry Harrison and John Tyler, Whigs. The tradition of "Hurrah Campaigns" has diminished over the years with modern electioneering. Much of the political activity has shifted toward special interest groups." |

But how can you tell the difference between a common button and a rare treasure? " |
| Political Memorabilia Reflects American Culture of the Time. | "America is the nation that invented the campaign freebie. Historians say Andrew Jackson's was the first campaign with organized giveaways, in 1824. "Campaign giveaways started in earnest in 1840," says Smithsonian curator Larry Bird. "That was the first time consistent imagery began to be applied to items given out during campaigns"--specifically the "Log Cabin" campaign of William Henry Harrison." |
| Collector's Corner: Political Memorabilia | "Buttons, bumper stickers and yard signs are relatively easy to come by, not to mention they are free. The reason the candidates give away their trinkets is the same reason Nike brands their name on the bottom of their sneakers, free press. At the cost of pennies to make stickers, buttons and yard signs, it's a safe bet to say that with good circulation the candidate will get their share of free press." |
| Pinning Down the Past | "BOB WARREN'S COLLECTION includes buttons from every presidential election since the "pin-backs," as they are called, were first made in 1896. From campaigns earlier in the 1800s, he has what served as political buttons of the time--medalets (small medals), watch fobs, ribbons, coins and clothing buttons, including a Lincoln campaign coin. " |
| Collecting Political Items During the 1800's | "The collecting of political Americana probably started in 1789 when the very first George Washington "GW" inaugural item was struck. Over the years, as political opposition grew, these American political items not only advertised one's favorite candidate, but left a vast array of tangible political history for all of us to enjoy." |

| The Typewriter | "Living when people can "process words," instantly copy them, and even send them almost anywhere in the world over the telephone lines, we may find it hard to believe that the forerunner of the word processor, the typewriter, was invented little more than a hundred years ago." |
| The Classic Typewriter Page | "The concept of a typewriter dates back at least to 1714, when Englishman Henry Mill filed a vaguely-worded patent for "an artificial machine or method for the impressing or transcribing of letters singly or progressively one after another." But the first typewriter proven to have worked was built by the Italian Pellegrino Turri in 1808 for his blind friend Countess Carolina Fantoni da Fivizzono (as established by Michael Adler in his excellent 1973 book The Writing Machine); unfortunately, we do not know what the machine looked like, but we do have specimens of letters written by the Countess on it." |

Thom delivered what is known as “manufactured” ice, which is not the “natural” ice that was once harvested during the New England winter months from local ponds in the early 1900s and delivered by the Icemen in horse drawn wagons. The ice that Thom delivered was manufactured in nearby Holyoke, Massachusetts by the family’s other ice company appropriately named Holyoke Ice Company. The product was then transferred to Liberty Ice where it was cubed, bagged and delivered to vending machines or businesses." |

| Mt. Washington Glass Toothpick Holders | "I started collecting toothpick holders more than 20 years ago and like so many other collectors, my first one was inherited from family. It was the common cut glass Strawberry Diamond and Fan. For several years cut glass and clear pattern glass were all I bought. Then I started specializing in companies such as Heisey, Fostoria, Duncan & Miller and the series known to toothpick collectors as the State Patterns. Needless to say as you view the items from my collection which illustrate this article, the ñaddicitonî has progressed far from that point with me now." |
